Metal Listens - May 2-8

The various listens I had over the previous week, first staying up-to-date on current releases before going through the ages to listen to an older release. First up is the newer releases: Decrapted-Bloody Rivers of Death (89/100) The debut release from the two-piece Spanish Death Metal supergroup. Simple churning riffing, deep pounding rhythms, and thick, murky atmospheric touches here effectively combine into a devastating old-school effort. Focusing on straightforward patterns with more of a forceful impact than dynamic technicality, the overall impression is something not entirely unoriginal but highly effective and evocative of the scenes' originators which employed similar approaches to the rhythms. Speeding up into dirty thrashing sections with pounding drum-work or slowing down into sprawling atmospheric patterns that bring about a more prominent chugging-based series of riffing, the overall appearance here is of a vicious, old-school throwback as befitting their members...

Metal Listens April 4-10

The various listens I had over the previous week, first staying up-to-date on current releases before going through the ages to listen to an older release. First up is the newer releases: Arkaik-Labyrinth of Hungry Ghosts (96/100) The sixth full-length from the US Tech/Death masters. Thumping rhythms, static start/stop riffing, and challenging arrangements blaze throughout a frantic assortment of rhythm and tempo changes throughout here. The riffing remains the hallmark here with swirling rhythms, complex arrangements, and challenging grooves incorporated into the tight approach which all runs through mid-range stomps and faster thrashing sections with various other tempo variations within. Fueled by the hard-hitting drum blasts and sci-fi themed lyrics that are augmented by ethereal melodic accents placed throughout, there's quite a lot to like here which isn't really brought down by too many factors beyond several sections being repeated to the point of not really standing ou...

The various listens I had over the previous week, first staying up-to-date on current releases before going through the ages to listen to an older release. First up is the newer releases: Morton-Horror of Daniel Wagner (93/100) The second full-length from the Ukrainian Metallers. Steady, thumping riffing, forceful melodies, and straightforward rhythms offer a highly enjoyable series of unorthodox mid-tempo efforts. Offering a straightforward approach with the riffing to keep this one contained within a more traditional old-school framework with the thick, crunchy patterns, the use of the trinkling melodic accents that border on the electronic soundscape at times over this full-throttle attack of heavy riff-work and pounding drumming. With the extravagant story in the lyrics requiring plenty of material to work with, this can be a daunting experience, especially with some generous running times on some of the tracks that let this run on for over an hour for no real reason.
